Rhythms Class Descriptions
 

Spirited, Fun & Energetic Movement/Dance Classes

 
Afro-Modern Dance - An energetic class that fuses West African-based movements with Modern dance vocabulary and structures.  Afro-Modern Dance will help people to move with more articulation and rhythmic awareness.

African Dance - A holistic approach to drum, dance and song that is fun, encouraging and accessible, with a focus on joyful exploration.  Connecting mind, body, and spirit, students learn to express themselves through a powerful and lyrical vocabulary of rhythm and dance.

Shake Your Soul® - Shake Your Soul® is a moving experience where music inspires your spirit, dynamic movements free your body, and entrancing rhythms call forth the power of your soul! Shake Your Soul® draws from modern and African dance, Body-Mind Centering, yoga, qi kung and Body-Centered Expressive Therapy. All of these influences merge into a seamless whole that evokes spirited movement that’s healing for your physical and emotional heart.
 

Hip Hop Jazz Funk - Move and groove to the slammin' sounds of Motown or rock to the sounds of the '60's.  Find your inspiration to move in a variety of music and dance styles, including hip hop, jazz and funk.
 

Afro-Caribbean Dance - The goal of this class is to infuse the community that attends with the joy of acknowledging the bounty of life through community dances.  Some of the dances taught include to Samba from Brazil; a joyous dance performed at the time of Carival, Koy from Haiti; and West African dance.  This class is open to all levels of dancers from beginner to advanced.
 

Hip Hop for Adults- In this class you will explore the basics of popping, locking and break-dancing.  this will make hip hop fun and accessible for anyone who wants to dance. We will focus on different hip hop styles and learn combinations to great music. Everyone is welcome!
 

Salsa Dance - A basic Latin dance class focusing on salsa, bachata, meringue and cha cha cha.  A dance party follows to allow couples to practice and enjoy their new moves.

Belly Dance Workout– Be prepared to tone, strengthen, sweat and laugh! An ancient Greco-Turkish tradition that will leave you feeling strong and powerful! Barefoot. Bring a hip scarf!


 

Hand Drumming - Learn hand drumming techniques through exercises, games and polyrhythms.  Build self-confidence and empowerment through group dynamics while exploring your own inner rhythms.  Sharpen your focus and concentration through rhythm repetition and entrainment while increasing mental and physical coordination.

Latin Dance Workout- In this class the vocabulary of Salsa, Meringue, and Bachata will be used to move the body in fun and exciting ways. Besides enjoying yourself you will get an integrated workout and elevate your heart rate.
 

Fundamentals of Argentine Tango - Learn the dance known for its beauty.  Steps preparing you for a typical milonga (tango dance party) -- Parallel and Cross Walk, Front and Back Ochos, the Cross, and Giro -- will be taught.

Intermediate Tango - The focus for this class is on improving improvisational and technical skills while executing more complicated moves.

Healing Movement Classes

Qi gong - Qi gong combines breath, movement and intention to build your life force energy.  This class will teach you simple yet powerful ancient Chinese exercise and meditation forms to revitalize your energy, relieve stress, enhance your immune system, and hasten the body's natural healing process and well being of the mind, body and spirit. This class will energize and awaken a reservoir of inner energy that lives in your core and with power and grace. Moving this energy throughout the body will create a peaceful and dynamic vitality in both the mind and body. Move Well- Feel Well- In this class you will learn how to stretch and strengthen your back without hurting, on the mat, on and off the physio-ball and in movement. The class is led with great music and moves that will make you feel 20 years younger.

Yoga Classes
Originating from a Sanskrit word, yoga, means to join or unite.  The practice of yoga improves health, encourages movement toward mental and emotional peace and provides tools to cultivate an overall sense of joy and well-being.  Rhythms offers a variety of levels of yoga practice:

Gentle/Beginner || Intermediate/Moderate || Vigorous/Advanced
 

Core Yoga with a Vinyasa Flow: This class is designed to help you build stamina from the core of your body all the way to the extremities. The class begins with a Vinyasa flow warm-up, followed by an abdominal workout on physioballs leading to yoga postures held longer to really strengthen the whole body Gentle Yoga - This gentle yoga class will help you increase flexibility and balance; learn modifications for your unique limitations/injuries; learn safety tips, contraindications, benefits, basic yoga poses and breathing techniques at a moderate pace ideal for relaxation.
Men's Stretch & Yoga - A men's only opportunity to stretch, de-stress, and engage in a moderate yoga practice that inspires, cultivates stillness within, and strengthens and stretches the body, mind and spirit.

Moderate Flow Yoga - This class builds on a systematic series of yoga postures designed to increase strength and flexibility. Here, you will be guided through the sun salutation, with additional postures added as the class progresses. 

Moderate/Vigorous - In this class you will challenge yourself with longer holding of positions, as well as fast flowing movement for strength and stamina; practice advanced breathing and meditation techniques for stress reduction Restorative Yoga for Stress Reduction: This is designed for people who wants to get back into movement using a gentle approach. The postures will be combined with breath and restorative poses as well as an exploration of how to unwind thought patterns that generate stress.
Shake Your Vinyasa- Following the Shake Your Soul Dance class on Tuesday night, Jane Ciepiela will guide your through a slower and deeper yoga practice helping the body to open up after being warmed up with dance. Shake Your Soul Dance class not mandatory. 

Slow Flow Yoga - A vinyasa flow to awaken the body's energy. Discover how to build up energy though movement and allow it to flow slowly.

Yoga Basics and Fundamentals - Work with fundamental Hatha yoga postures and focus on alignment and breath.  Basic vinyasa flow will be introduced to give students an awareness of moving through yoga postures with their breath.

Breathe Into Vinyasa Yoga: The practice of Pranayama enhances energy and focuses the mind. In this class you will learn to explore different type of breaths while practicing challenging postures and fast flowing movements for strength and stamina.
Vinyasa Flow (Vigorous) - In this flow class you will work from posture to posture in a powerful yogic dance. You will see threads of Kriya, Ashtanga, Hatha, and many yoga genres woven into this class. Previous yoga experience is recommended. Vinyasa Fusion (with partner on Thursday AM). In this class you will learn to strengthen yourself in a faster yoga flow done individually then moving (on Thursday a.m. only) into a Thai partner yoga practice.

Creative Movement and Dance for Young People
 

Creative Movement and Modern Dance Basics for Ages 6-7 - This class will deepen children's awareness of movement, rhythm and self-expression.  Classes will develop thematically, focusing on dynamics of energy, spatial awareness and each child's innate ability to improvise.  Youngsters will have the opportunity to explore dance and have a lot of fun doing it.  Ages 6-7 will explore and emphasize self-expression and the building of basic modern dance vocabulary.

Jazz/Modern for Ages 8-10 - This class will work with fundamental jazz and modern techniques.  The fusion of these two dance forms creates an interesting and exciting way of moving through space.  Jazz brings a strong sense of rhythm and clarity while Modern allows dancers to move effortlessly through space by learning to release their weight and use momentum.  Ages 8-10 will focus on learning basic principles from both techniques and will have the opportunity to use what they have learned to create personal and self-expressive movement and choreography.

Teen Hip Hop Jazz for Ages 14-17 - Rock the hottest hip hop jazz moves! Learn free styling, popping and locking, breaking and more!  Students will use fundamentals to work on more complex movement combinations and will create their own choreography using personal music choices.
 

Hip Hop for Ages 8-10 and 11-14 - These classes will explore the basics of popping, locking and break dancing.  Students will learn foundational movements and their historical context.  Ages 8-10 will focus on basic vocabulary and some movement combinations and individual choreography.  Ages 11-14 will use fundamentals to work on more complex movement combinations and will create their own choreography using personal music choices.

West-African Style Hand Drumming for Kids - Learn hand drumming techniques through exercises, games, and African
polyrhythms. Build self confidence and empowerment through group dynamics while exploring your own inner rhythm. Sharpen your focus and concentration through rhythm repetition and entrainment, while increasing mental and physical coordination.

Yoga for Kids Ages 11-14 - Introduce your child to a natural and healthy way to exercise, relax, focus and strengthen the mind/body/spirit connection through this class.
